As a fourth example on light-handed regulation, Brian will add the failings of the building industry (such as leaky buildings and the lack of resilience to earthquakes) to the earlier examples of failures of health and safety, financial supervision and the electricity industry. But he will go on to suggest what can be done? What policy framework might a social democratic government introduce to reduce the deaths, the human heartbreak, the economic waste, and the exploitation of consumers which light-handed regulation has created.
