While there is considerable discussion around KiwiSaver, it is seldom mentioned in connection with Superannuation reforms. Umesh proposes that together these should be seen as a single policy project designed to eliminate the public provision of social security. He will outline some of the problems this shift in pension policy creates for a progressive political movement, including the impact on younger generations. He will also outline some alternative ways forward by asking us to rethink the concept of savings and investment to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Umesh Perinpanayagam recently stood as a Green Party candidate in the 2014 General Election. He studied economics amongst other things at the University of Auckland. For the last three years he has been employed by Parliamentary Services. He is the convenor of the Green Left Network, a national network dedicated to bringing an analysis of class, race and gender to Green politics.
