Lisa Marriott - Are We All Equal in New Zealand?

Registration is closed for this event

Lisa Marriott's presentation will examine situations in New Zealand such as low-income welfare fraud and high-income tax evasion where individuals who are least advantaged will be treated more punitively than those who are most advantaged. The talk will include outcomes from the justice system, debt management and the definitions that result in different outcomes for different “types” of people.

Lisa Marriott is an Associate Professor of Taxation at Victoria University’s School of Accounting and Commercial Law. Her research interests include social justice and inequality, and the behavioural impacts of taxation. In 2013 Lisa was awarded a Royal Society Marsden Grant to investigate the different treatments of tax evasion and welfare fraud in the New Zealand justice system. Lisa has worked in the private sector in the UK and the public sector in New Zealand.
