Peter Rice - Reversing New Zealand’s Decline

Registration is closed for this event

Government and the private sector must coordinate to advance the economy. Poor productivity, low productive investment, weak R&D spending sets a country on a path of relative decline. The “Financing Investment” reports for the UK Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer propose new mandates, new institutions and new thinking to drive growth and productivity and meet the needs of its citizens. In this talk, Peter Rice will explain some of the economic thinking lying behind these reports, describe the institutions being proposed, and sketch out how the thinking and institutions could be relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand under a Labour-led government.

Peter Rice (LLB, BBus (International Business), MSc (Globalisation and Development) is the founder of Clearpoint Advisors, based in London. He has over 25 years’ experience as a lawyer and banker. Peter is an advisor to the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer John McDonnell MP (and the next Chancellor in a Jeremy Corban cabinet). He is the co-author of two reports: “Financing Investment: Interim Report” (December 2017) and “Financing Investment: Final Report” (June 2018). He is a graduate of the University of Auckland and his whānau and hapū are based in the Rotorua.
