Luke Oldfield - The Politics of Incarceration

Registration is closed for this event

Increasingly punitive sentences have become an area of focus among the academic communities of Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Criminologists in each of these ‘settler' countries have identified what appears to be the presence of penal populism, a phenomenon whereby the voting public readily gravitate toward politicians that promote tough law & order policies.

The consequence in each of these countries has been decades of criminal justice reforms that have led to substantial increases in the number of persons incarcerated. Luke’s research examines the limited impact of evidence-based, rights-focused and cost-sensitive arguments in counteracting the rise of penal populism. He posits that advocates of progressive reform may need to build a new coalition of voters in the interest of accomplishing any substantive reform.

Luke Oldfield has completed an MA at the University of Waikato and is a PhD candidate at the University of Auckland. He was formerly a prison guard at the Spring Hill Correctional Facility.
