China's Socialist Market Economy

Since the 1990s, the Chinese government have increasingly talked about a ‘socialist market economy’. This talk explores what this term means in theory and practice. It explores China’s hybrid model of economic governance and discusses China’s 14th Five Year Plan and the new Dual Circulation strategy. In concludes by considering how countries like New Zealand best engage with a hybrid economic system.

Dr Jason Young is Associate Professor in Political Science and International Relations at Victoria University of Wellington and Director of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre. His research focuses on Chinese politico-economic and institutional reform, Chinese foreign policy and New Zealand-China relations. His current research focuses on the concept of US-China economic decoupling and the implications for other economies. He is also a frequent commentator in New Zealand and international media.
