Minister Shane Jones is introducing fast track ‘reforms’ to the our fishing industry that will ensure the big players squeeze out the small fishers and entrench an already bankrupt quota system.
Our fisheries are under severe stress: the recent decision by the High Court ruling that the current catch number decision for Northland Crayfish is unlawful and ineffective for managing the crayfish population, is repeated across the quota regime.The Hauraki Gulf has lost much of its underwater ecological diversity due to harmful fishing methods such as bottom trawling.Fishing contributes 0.7% of NZ GDP and 3% of NZ exports with 16,500 jobs.Sam Woolford represents LegaseaThis seminar will discuss the urgent need for submissions to the Minister's proposed reforms and will outline what the longer term strategy should to secure a sustainable fishing resource.Please register if you plan to attend in person, but NOT if you intend to watch online.
