On 22 May, the coalition government will release its budget for 2025, which it says will focus on "boosting economic growth, improving social outcomes, controlling government spending, and investing in long-term infrastructure.”
But who, really, is this budget designed to serve? What values and visions for Aotearoa New Zealand lie beneath its line items? And, perhaps most importantly, what are the alternatives?
Join us, as we unpack Budget 2025 and explore progressive alternatives, including the Greens’ alternative budget, with the following panel:
Julie Anne Genter, Green MP for Rongotai, who served as one of the first Green Ministers as Minister for Women and Associate Minister of Transport and Health.
Deborah Russell, Labour MP, who served as Minister of Statistics, Minister Responsible for the Earthquake Commission and Associate Minister of Revenue, and is co-author of the book Tax and Fairness (BWB).
Shamubeel Eaqub, experienced economist and commentator, who is known for his independent and at times contrarian contributions to debate about Aotearoa New Zealand’s political economy. He is co-author of the books The New Zealand Economy (AUP) and Generation Rent (BWB), and of Growing Apart (BWB).
The discussion will be chaired by journalist Ollie Neas.
