"Broaden and build: Key elements for an effective mental health system in Aotearoa New Zealand"

Our mental health system is under severe strain: demands are increasing and funding has not kept up. In this discussion, I will provide reminders of the importance of exposure to unfavourable social, economic and environmental circumstances in the genesis of distress, curiously absent in many current narratives, as well as considering three ideas for supporting and strengthening the mental health and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

Dr Sarb Johal has dedicated his career to mental health and wellbeing for over 25 years in both New Zealand and the UK, including specialist work in clinical psychology and disaster mental health.
