What’s left for education? - John Morgan - 20 Sept - AKL

Registration is closed for this event

In The Left Hemisphere (2013) Ramzig Keucheyan (2013) argues that any attempt to examine the prospects for progressive social change must come to terms with the fact that the period since the 1970s has been a defeat for the ‘left’. In education, ‘left’ assumptions based largely on notions of ‘equality of opportunity’ and ‘progressivism’ were first challenged and then, replaced by an educational language of ‘choice’, ‘markets’ and ‘accountability’. The prevailing narrative for education acquiesced this language to the disappointment of many.
This presentation is based around the final chapter of John’s new book Culture and the political economy of schooling: what's left for education? (Routledge). He asks how do we rebuild our approach of education from here. After a brief appraisal of where we are now he explores the potential and limits of "educational Keynesianism", radical pedagogy, communitarianism, and accelerationism, before stating the case that education should be based around the principles of socialist realism.

John Morgan joined the University of Auckland in May 2012 after working at University of Bristol and the Institute of Education, University of London + ten years teaching geography in London schools and colleges. He lead ‘Enquiring Minds’, funded by Microsoft under its global Partners in Learning programme leading to his interests in a) how schools and curriculum change (and why they often don't); b) how digital futures are imagined to transform schooling and young people's lives; c) the political economies of education and educational futures. He is currently working on two projects – exploring the commercialisation strategies of New Zealand universities, and another, examining alternative food networks in Auckland.
See John’s blog site for his appraisal of current education debates.
