A Green New Deal for Aotearoa, New Zealand

Registration is closed for this event

In conjunction with The Policy Observatory, AUTAUTPO.jpg

TANIA POUWHARE. Manager - Community and Social Innovation with The Southern Initiative (Auckland Council), and
GEORGIA LALA. entrepreneur / student / environmentalist.

A Green New Deal is inspired by President Roosevelt’s New Deal economic stimulus of the Great Depression. Now, with a Covid-induced recession, facing a climate catastrophe and worsening social equity, the GREEN NEW DEAL is getting a life as a way forward, especially in social democratic circles. There are GND frameworks published for the USA, the UK and Europe; but what could his mean for Aotearoa? How might we create a GND framework that doesn’t just shape economic or climate change strategies, but also for a truly bi-cultural notion of society and its governance. From Tania and Georgia, we have an iinvitation to consider a just, ecologically sound and diverse new world.

Tania is of Ngāi Tūhoe descent on her father’s side and has Swedish, Irish, English and Scottish whakapapa on her mother’s side. She has held strategy roles within Auckland Council, lived and worked in Dublin before settling in London for a decade, where she was head of policy and campaigns at the Women’s Resource Centre. Before her move abroad, she worked for the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges in a policy role. Tania is calling for a Green New Deal for south and west Auckland to reset the economy so it is fairer for ordinary people and good for our biosphere as well.

Georgia Lala is trying to change the way we look at sustainability. Her award-winning research into the applications of aquaponics won her the Prime Minister’s Future Scientist award at the age of 18. In 2016, she was a TedX Auckland speaker and spoke on innovation in the environmental space. Georgia completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University studying Political Science, and has since moved into the policy space in Auckland. Georgia hopes to challenge the way individuals and companies look at adopting sustainable approaches to both production and living.
