The Employment Contracts Act, the falling wages share, and the rise of rentier capitalism in New Zealand: a review of the evidence 1939-2019.

Geoff Bertram and Bill Rosenberg report on the results of applying some new techniques to analysing the national accounts.

Their research was motivated by two central questions: first, why did the Employment Contracts Act 1991 not show up in earlier work as a turning point in the aggregate statistical record, and second, where did the money go as the wage share fell (who benefited)?  They now have answers to both those questions, which give support both to fair pay agreements and to more vigorous regulation and taxation of corporate players in the economy.
