The AUKUS agreement - Implications for New Zealand?

Registration is closed for this event
The AUKUS agreement has significant implications for New Zealand. Does AUKUS suggest some distancing between New Zealand and our traditional defence partners? Could that distancing provide some opportunities for New Zealand to explore a more independent foreign policy? And how should New Zealand respond to the further militarisation of the Pacific that AUKUS could bring?

Thomas Nash is a co-director of New Zealand Alternative, which is an independent working to open up more public debate on the role of Aotearoa New Zealand in the world. He is also a Regional Councillor for Wellington and previously spent 15 years working on humanitarian and disarmament campaigns. Dr Anna Powles is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Defence and Security Studies at Massey University. Her research is focussed on how state and non-state actors are shaping regional security, strategic competition and the intersection of geopolitics and local security dynamics in the Pacific Islands, New Zealand foreign policy in the Pacific, and regional security cooperation.
